All in one

The Swiss law firm Lenz & Staehelin has found a signature solution that can be operated on-prem and that offers all the security advantages of an European solution: MOXIS.
Lenz & Staehelin is one of the largest law firms in Switzerland: 200 lawyers support clients, most of them come from business and industry. The experts for Swiss business law use MOXIS for the convenience of their clients. The e-signature solution from XiTrust is the only product on the market that can meet Lenz & Staehelin’s high demands for security and efficiency.
Davide Cortorreal has been part of the Swiss law firm Lenz & Staehelin for more than 20 years. This has not affected his curiosity about new IT solutions. “In my position, it’s important to always be on the lookout for the best possible solutions to support our core business,” explains the IT manager at Lenz & Staehelin. A goal that has to be called ambitious: 200 lawyers work for clients at Lenz & Staehelin. This makes the company one of the largest law firms in Switzerland. Companies in particular seek the advice of Lenz & Staehelin. Contract law, tax law, employment law, financial law and intellectual property issues are just some of the main areas the lawyers deal with on a daily basis.
„Without the ability to sign with MOXIS regardless of location, we would have risked our full ability to operate.”

MOXIS is one of the tools Davide Cortorreal has integrated into in-house processes. “We’ve been using electronic signatures at Lenz & Staehelin for four or five years now. The lockdown last year speeded up the project even more,” says the IT manager. It had turned out, as with many XiTrust customers, that physical presence in the company office was clearly too complicated for a signature. Especially in times of Corona. “Without the ability to sign with MOXIS regardless of location, we would have risked our full ability to operate,” says Davide Cortorreal.
On-Prem as knock-out criteria
At Lenz & Staehelin, they don’t like to rely on others, preferring to keep the reins in their own hands. It is therefore part of the company’s philosophy to work with its own internal experts instead of buying in external expertise. The same demands are also placed on the company’s IT.
The requirements for an e-signature solution were correspondingly specific: The solution had to be operated on-prem. “This is not possible with all solutions on the market,” knows Davide Cortorreal. A search in Swisscom’s partner list put the IT specialist on the right track. “In all legal matters, we naturally use the highest quality signature,” says the IT manager. “So we needed not only a solution that we could run on our in-house servers, but one that could also provide qualified electronic signatures.” In this segment, says Davide Cortorreal, MOXIS from XiTrust was unrivaled.
The use of electronic signatures at Lenz & Staehelin is partly driven by the clients. Some of them work exclusively with electronic signatures and expect this from all business partners accordingly. “But e-signatures are also already standard in many cases when dealing with authorities and institutions,” observes Davide Cortorreal.
European data security
As a specialist in Swiss business law, Lenz & Staehelin is the first point of contact for foreign clients in Switzerland. In addition, the lawyers keep a very close eye on the impact of EU legislation on companies in this country. This is one of the reasons why a European solution was needed that is legally waterproof against data queries by U.S. authorities, which does not apply to U.S.-based signature providers.
“The fact that XiTrust offers a purely European, eIDAS-compliant solution was another argument for us,” adds Davide Cortorreal. The IT manager sees the support from XiTrust as the icing on the cake of this success story: “Short lines! We have always received quick answers to our questions. A very efficient collaboration!”
